The Journal

I basically redesigned The Journal single-handedly, and then tweaked it with input from other staff members. The redesign was part of a layout and design independent study course I took during the Spring 2004 semester. My teacher helped me work through the early versions of the redesign, which were basically changes in typography and the flag. I also got input from some friends and associates at The News-Press, including Jeremy Gilbert, who is now at the St. Pete Times. The redesign debuted in Fall 2004. We bumped up the typeface to 9.5 after some complaints from older staff members, and the index/weather box changed multiple times, eventually turning into the banner along the bottom. Cutouts and promos above the flag also changed - they are now anchored in the ears, rather than floating randomly as they did initially. I'll continue to make small tweaks, but I think the new design offers a fresh, professional face for an award-winning newspaper. - Jonathan Kleinow
