I shot this for our football tab cover.
Background: Dixie State football is now division two and has an entire new team this year. no one knows what to expect, and I don't think the players do either.

Anyway, the sports editor said he wants to see faces and the guy in the photo (number 5) is a nobody so he doesn't want to use the image.

I say it's more esoteric and speaks to the uncertain nature of the team as they take the field for the first time as a division 2 team.

Any thoughts?

Hi Chris, I like the photo but the number on the jersey loses that any player feel that I want if it isn't the lone returner. That said, Tell the sports editor to get over it and run the photo. It will hold the football tab cover very well. Remind him that the average reader will not have the intimacy with the subject that he does and they will read the pic differently than a sports editor. Then tell him to call me and I'll say it again. Keep clicking! Joe

I think you know exactly what I'm going to say....Bull****, with a capital "B." I think it would be great for the tab cover, now I'm wondering what he'll say about my tab cover, since I went kinda the same route you did. I also went for the "football is back" feel and therefore there are no recognizable faces in the photo, in other words, a non "action" photo. I'm not trying to turn this critique into a sports editor bashing, but if they keep refusing to run great storytelling photos such as this one, then I have no choice. That being said, the composition is great, but I do agree with Joey, I wish there was no number on his jersey, the funny thing is, that's probably not even the real number 5 on the team, since the practice jerseys rarely match up to the game jerseys. Overall great shot, keep them coming. It's now official, WSU photographers have taken over Southern Utah!
